Community Reinvestment

A very important part of our DNA is reinvesting a significant portion of our profits back into the communities that we live in and the communities that we source our great coffee from. The beautiful thing about the coffee business is that it's really powerful at connecting people with people. It has made us realize that people everywhere have similar needs and desires. As a coffee roaster and retailer, we have the opportunity to make real differences in people's lives. Sometimes this is accomplished by simply providing fresh brewed coffee for an important community gathering or donating some freshly roasted beans for a silent auction to help support a local school. Other times it may involve a significant sustainability effort such as giving a cooperative of small coffee farmers money to improve their coffee washing station thereby providing the farmers a way to improve the quality of their coffee and receive more money from buyers.

Here are two examples of what we are currently doing:

"Kenya Project" Gatanga, Kenya

In the summer of 2008 we visited farming communities in East Africa. During this trip we visited a small cooperative in the Thika region of Kenya called Gatanga Kigio. We had the opportunity to meet several members of the co-op. They were very proud farmers and were excited for us to see their small farming plots. They felt they were doing a wonderful job growing their coffee and we did too. When it came time to visit the washing station there was visible concern and we soon learned why. The facility was in a sad state of repair. The co-op wasunable to reinvest into this very important processing facility. We knew that the poor condition of the facility was most likely having a significant impact on the quality of the coffee, as was evident at the coffee cupping table.

As a result of this visit, we decided that funding the rehabilitation of the Gatanga Co-op washing station was the type of project that would be a good fit for our sustainability model of reinvesting in projects that will help farms produce higher quality coffee and earn farmers higher prices for years to come. In addition, with the help of Deloitte-Kenya, we have secured a fund grant to be used for training on the new equipment. Stay up to date with Kenya Farm Cooperative Project updates on our blog.
